I was 12 or 13 when MTV premiered. One of the first videos I saw on the channel was David Bowie’s Ashes to Ashes.

I was familiar with songs like “Major Tom” and Changes but it wasn’t until I saw the video for Ashes to Ashes on MTV that truly understood David Bowie.

From the first shot of his lone, sad clown singing, I knew he was a kindred spirit. He was odd. But, he wasn’t just odd; he reveled in his oddness.

He was a beautiful, majestic weirdo who gave a voice to all the strange and misunderstood.

He let all us outcasts know it was OK to be outcasts. That being outcast could even be cool.

He gave us all permission to embrace our weirdness.

David Bowie carved out a place for us in this crazy world.

He gave us hope!

Rest in Peace Mr. Bowie.
